May 28,
2005; West Salem, WI - It was a good night to be quick
at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Andy Burgess took quick time in the Kwik Trip
NASCAR Late Model division, and chased down Chris Skrede and Steve Holzhausen to take the
feature win, while Dan Linnehan chased down Lucas Korish, and then held off Tom Thill for
the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature win.
In the late model feature, Bill Niles looked well on his way to taking his
first late model checkered, but the combination of a yellow flag on lap eight, and an
exhaust pipe slipping out the side of his car put him to the back of the field, and then
into the pits by lap 15. Niles' misfortune after the caution that saw Dan Steele hit the
turn two wall hard, allowed Chris Skrede to take the lead, and he opened up a
five-car advanage as Steve Holzhausen and Burgess charged through the field.
Holzhausen led the way, ducking inside of Tony Bagstad on lap 11, and then
going outside to get by Tom McClintock a lap later. he closed Skrede's lead quickly, with
Burgess taking two more laps to move into third. Holzhausen took the lead on lap 18,
powering by Skrede on the backstretch.
Burgess also used the high line to move by Skrede a lap later, but he was
able to edge his Menard's Monte Carlo underneath Holzhausen in turn one on lap 21, and
pull into the lead on the backstretch for his second win of the season. Holzhausen was
second, followed by Skrede, McClintock and Todd Oliver, who edged Kevin Nuttleman at the
line. Nuttleman was sixth, followed by Charlie Menard, Brent Kirchner, Mark Lamoreaux and
Todd Korish.
Burgess was fast qualifier for the fifth time, averaging 98.942 MPH for his quickest lap
in the two-lap run.
Jeff Baker and Adam Degenhardt took the qualifying heat wins, while Kevin
Nuttleman and Mike Belling won the Bud Dashes.
Linnehan managed to do what Lucas Korish could not, holding off a
challenge on a restart, as he took the Sportsman feature win. Korish led for the first ten
laps, before Linnehan used a restart after a caution - caused by a Tony Leis spin - to
move to the front. Bill Miller spun on lap 13, giving a hard-charging Tom Thill a shot at
Linnehan with two to go. Thill got a quarter-panel underneath Linnehan on the backstretch,
but was unable to pull alongside, as Linnehan took his first win of the year.
Thill was second, followed by Korish, Trent Boettcher, and Dan Gilster.
Gilster had made a run on Korish after an early restart, but was unable to hold the
outside line, allowing Linnehan by on the inside to set up his battle with Korish for the
lead.
Emily Sue Steck came up from the rear of the field in the non-qualifying
heat, taking the lead with 3 laps to go to get her first checkered in the sportsman
division. Rob Mason and Mike Carlson took qualifying heat races, while the Bud Dash wins
went to Branden Berg and Jimmy Gilster. Linnehan was fast timer, at 88.582 MPH. Rob Curran
came away the victor in the B-Main.
Despite a car hard into the wall early, and two spins, the United Auto
Supply Thunderstox managed to keep their race green from start to finish, and Jeff Stumlin
managed to hold off all challengers to take the win. Todd Lockington was second, followed
by Jason Schaller, Steve Owen and Justin Berg.
Points leader Jason Bolster totaled his car at the end of the first heat,
when he slammed the frontstretch wall while avoiding a last-lap spin. Greg Lindvig took
that heat win, while the other four heats went to Steve Owen, Andy Barney, Andy Moore and
Dan Erdmann. Bolster jumped into Denise Miller's ride for the B-Main, but was unable to
advance to the feature as Adam Moore took the win. Ron Heller claimed the checkers in the
Bud Dash. Chris Vinson took the win in the C-Main.
This weekend, the annual Kid's Night races will be held, with a 10,000
penny scramble before the races, and all the action of the NASCAR Kwik Trip Late Models,
Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman and United Auto Supply Thundertox, plus the fan-favorite
Outhouse Race. Qualifying begins at 5:05, with the first race at 7:30 p.m.
