Andy Burgess and his team made a renewed effort on
quaifying and heat racing, believing his feature performance would
take care of itself. How right he was.
The Fall Creek, Wis., driver earned his first fast
qualifying effort of the season Saturday night at the La Crosse
Fairgrounds Speedway, finished third in a highly-competitive heat
race, then won the 25-lap NASCAR Kwik Trip Late Model feature race
before an enthusiastic crowd. The feature win, his third of the
season, vaulted Burgess past nine-time track champion Kevin
Nuttleman into the points lead. Burgess has 430 points, six more
than Nuttleman.
It didn't come easy for Burgess as a young,
up-and-coming driver named Adam Degenhardt started on the pole and
refused to relinquish the lead for the first 19 laps. Degenhardt,
who has one feature win to his credit this season, appeared poised
to win his second feature when the third -- and final -- caution
came out when rookie Matt Henderson and Andy Niles tangled on the
backstretch. It was the break that Burgess needed as the driver of
car No. 85 bolted to the low side on the restart, found the door
closed by Degenhardt, then went to the high groove in Turns 1 and 2.
After a half-lap of side-by-side racing, Burgess took the lead in
Turn 3. He held it for the remaining six laps despite a gallant
effort by Degenhardt.
Degenhardt remained strong to claim second, while
Westby, Wis., driver Jon Barrette -- having the best Late Model
season of his career -- ran well the entire race to finish third.
Rounding out the top five were Steve Holzhausen and Nuttleman, who
battled right to the end. Nuttleman had actually passed Holzhausen
for forth place on Lap 24, but Holzhausen -- a former track champion
-- regained the momentum and beat Nuttleman by two feet at the
finish line for fourth.
"To earn fast qualifying time, run well in the heat
race, then win the feature, it's unbelievable," said Burgess, who
finished second to Nuttleman in the points standings in 2005. "It
was a lot of fun. We're going to keep tinkering with the car and try
to get it faster. We need to get faster."
Jes Tenner and Brandon Berg engaged in an intense
battle at the start Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman Division feature
race. Berg and Tenner continued to battle throughout the
hotly-contested race until Tenner was able to take the lead with 4
laps remaining. Tenner held the lead, with Chad Rosendahl finishing
second. Dan Linnehan grabbed third place and maintained his position
atop the Sportsman Division standings. Chand Wehling finished
fourth, while Berg rounded out the top five in what continues to be
a very close and unpredictable points race.
Greg Lindvig and Jeff Stumlin tangled in a wild
United Auto Supply Thunderstox Division feature race with Lindvig
winning the battle. It was far from easy as Kris Buldhaupt spun with
seven laps to go, bringing out a caution flag. Lindvig was able to
prevail, grabbing the checkered flag. Stumlin finished second, but
was later disqualified during a post-race inspection as his car
exceeded the ride height allowed. That allowed Dan Secor to move
into second place, while Mark Krueger took third. Rounding out the
top five were Jake Krueger and Charles Vian, Jr.
