LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway Race Report

Korish Finally Prevails at LaCrosse

(West Salem, WI - July 8, 2006) - Todd Korish broke a two year feature win drought at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway on Quillin’s night at the races. After several hairy restarts, Korish narrowly edged Ronnie Hawley for his first Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature win this season.

hoto Highlights

The race began with J. Herbst on the pole, and it took Korish about a lap to gain the lead. On the fifth lap, Chris Skrede’s car was spun by Andy Niles in turns one and two, resulting in the race’s first yellow. As the race was about to restart, the leaders were slow to exit turn four, resulting in about five cars tangling in the middle to back of the pack. The race was cautioned again as several cars were relegated to the pits. After the second restart, Korish got off to a quick lead, as Ronnie Hawley worked his way to second, ahead of polesitter Herbst. Herbst started to fade through the field, and he was spun in turn two by point leader Andy Burgess on the final lap. Burgess admitted that it was his fault, and both went to the rear for the restart. Burgess stopped for consultation from the officials during the yellow, but failed to use the acceleration upon re-entering the track. Burgess was asked by officials to come back and use the acceleration lane, which he ignored, so he was black flagged, and Burgess retired from the race. As the race restarted, the leaders almost caused a big wreck like earlier, and they were given a “no-start.”

On the second attempt, it was a clean start, and Korish fended off a last turn challenge by young-gun Hawley. “I just wanted a clean finish,” commented Hawley after the race. “I could have bumped him a little and taken the spot at the restart, but I don’t race like that. I know that my first win is coming within the next few weeks,” concluded Hawley. It was Hawley’s best finish in a Late Model feature to date. Meanwhile, Korish celebrated his first win in two years. “The lapped cars were tough tonight. Some would give us room, and some wouldn’t give us any respect as leaders,” commented Korish after the win. “I’m going to savor this victory, because it doesn’t happen very often,” concluded Korish.

The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman Quillins 15 lap feature was won in dominating fashion by Randy Steinhoff. The Dodge Truck of Steinhoff, which started inside row two, was able to capitalize on the slips made by the front row starters Jerimy Wagner and rookie contender Randy Humfeld. On lap three, Humfeld slid high from the top spot and barely held on as half the field bypassed in turns three and four. The race’s only caution occurred on lap nine, as Chand Wehling bumped into Wagner’s car, resulting in a Wagner turn two spin. Luckily, all cars oncoming out of the corner narrowly missed him. Steinhoff resumed control after the double-file restart, and was able to hold on to take the win. The race’s last lap was a thrill as Lucas Korish touched the car of Aaron Hass going into turn three, as they battled for third. Hass almost spun twice though the corner, but was able to hold on to finish without any other cars involved. Jim Gilster took second, and Korish held on for third behind winner Steinhoff.

In the United Auto Supply Thunderstox, the Feature Race went caution free. Mid-race mishaps involved Justin Berg getting stuck in the mud in the infield, while at the same time Jerry Aylsworth was spun at the start-finish line. Several cars suffered minor damage in the mayhem as they exited turn four, but all were able to continue, except Aylsworth, who pulled off the track the next lap. The race saw row two starters Greg Lindvig and Jason Stark in a nose to tail battle for the lead the entire race. On the last lap, Lindvig dove to the high side of Stark and finished the last lap virtually even at the line. Stark was declared the winner in one of the closest Thunderstox finishes ever, ahead of Lindvig and Adam Moore.

The Features Sports Bar & Grill Hornets were in action for the second time this week, and the Feature winners were Steve Dwyer, Jim Schermerhorn, and Dan Breitsprecher.
