The feature field for the Machinists Union 25 lap main featured this year’s top two rookies on the front row. Second generation drivers Skylar Holzhausen of Bangor, and Mike Carlson of West Salem, son of Steve Carlson, began the race just two points apart for rookie of the year, as the crowd waited with anticipation for the main event. At the start, the young Holzhausen got the jump and took the early lead. Point leaders Kevin Nuttleman and Andy Burgess, meanwhile, started eighth and ninth, and were separated by just 11 points going into the evening.

Twenty-eight cars took the green, and the first yellow occurred on lap four, as the red Monte Carlo of Tyler Reedy had problems in turns one and two. The race was restarted, and the younger Holzhausen again got a jump on the field. The final 21 laps of the race went caution free, and Holzhausen showed how good a car he had, by stretching his lead to over ten car lengths over eventual runner-up, Burgess by the finish. Bloomington Minnesota’s Mark Lamoreaux, third in point standings, finished third, while Adam Degenhardt and point leader Nuttleman rounded out the top five.

Holzhausen was greeted with an overwhelming ovation from the crowd when he was introduced as the feature winner. “I knew that we had a fast car this year, and I could win, but I just needed a good starting spot,” commented a jubilant Skylar Holzhausen. “We finally got a good starting spot, and we used it to our advantage. It’s been a good battle against Mike (Carlson) this year, and I think it will go right down to the last race for Rookie of the Year,” concluded Skylar. It was a proud moment for father Steve Holzhausen. “I knew he was fast, and could win; it was just a matter of time…. He’s fearless,” commented Steve on his son’s victory. “I just kept watching the scoreboard hoping the laps would count down faster, and I really didn’t care about what position I was in,” concluded Steve.

Qualifying was rained out, and with Nuttleman’s fifth place finish and Burgess’s second place finish, Nuttleman has just a five point lead for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model championship, with just four race nights remaining in the 2006 season.

The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsmen Machinists Union 15 lap A-Main featured a comeback for point leader Jimmy Gilster, after a dismal mid-pack finish last week. Gilster took top honors in the main event, over the truck of Jamie Millis, Lucas Korish, John Olson, and Dan Linnehan. The race saw two yellows, with the first on lap four, as an accordion effect went through the pack and forced Aaron Hass’s car to bump runner-up in point standings Larry Bolster Jr. Bolster Jr. spun into the grass, along with Rob Mason. Bolster was unable to continue, and his championship chances severely diminished with the spin. The final yellow occurred as the cars took the white flag, with Matt Inglett’s car putting fluids on the track as he spun in turn one. The race saw a one lap shootout, with Gilster on top at the end. Gilster now holds a fifteen point lead over Chand Wehling and twenty-two over Trent Boettcher.

United Auto Supply Thunderstox Feature winner for the Machinists Union night at the races was Matt Moore, of Tomah, Wis. Finishing in the top five were Mark Krueger, Steve Bornitz, Jason Stark, and Kris Buldhaupt. The point battle between the Moore Brothers Adam and Andy shows Adam with a twenty point lead this week. Charles Vian Jr. is third, 41 points behind.

The Features Sports Bar & Grill Hornet division was in action after a month off, and feature winners included Travis Lee, Jeff Heaney, and Jim Schermerhorn.

Racing Continues next week, as USG presents United Building Centers night at the races, featuring the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models, Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsmen, United Auto Supply Thunderstox and the new Tuners Division. Gates open at 5:00, Qualifying at 5:45 and the first race is at 7:15. For more information about the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, please visit www.lacrossespeedway.com or call 608.786.1525.
