(West Salem, WI - April 22,
2006) - Mark Lamoreaux, of Bloomington, Minn., made
his three-hour venture to the
La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway Saturday night pay off in a big way
as he captured his first feature win of the 2006 racing season
before an enthusiastic crowd.
Lamoreaux was fast, but as he well knows, sometimes
it pays off to be at the right place at the right time. Dan Steele,
who led the first 20 laps of the 25-lap Kwik Trip Late Model
feature, slid up the track ever-so-slightly as he passed a lap car
between turns three and four on Lap 21, and found himself in the
loose rubber and stones known as the marbles.
It was a roll Steele didnt want, nor could he stop.
The West Salem man swerved, bobbled and skidded through turn four,
but somehow managed to regain control of his 2006 Chevy Monte Carlo.
He lost two places one to Lamoreaux and the other to upstart
J.Herbst but managed to straighten his car out and grab third
place. Its a position he would hold throughout the remaining five
laps.
Lamoreaux did have a few tense moments over the last
five laps, which included a restart on Lap 24. Skylar Holzhausen and
Troy Goodenough tangled in turn four resulting in both colliding
with the soft styrofoam wall, bringing out the second caution of the
race. Neither driver was injured, but both cars incurred
considerable damage.
Once the race resumed, it was a one-lap sprint to
the finish. Lamoreaux was able to grab the checkers, while Herbst,
Steele, Jon Barrette and Steve Carlson rouneded out the top five
finishers. By virtue of his ffith-place finish, Carlson took over
the KwikTrip Late Model points lead from nine-time track champion
Kevin Nuttleman. Nuttleman, last weeks feature winner, finished
seventh in main event and fell to third in the points.
The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman division feature ran smooth
compared to the first qualifying heat, in which Rob Mason went
hurdling into the soft wall blocks. The impact caused major damage
to the body of his car, but he walked away unscathed. Jamie Millis
pulled away after a late race caution for his first feature win of
the 2006 season in his Chevy Silverado truck.
Andy Moore and Mike Krueger, Jr., both of Sparta, Wis., finished
one-two in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature race. Racing
was, as it always is in the division, bumper to bumper, with
considerable car contact on the quarter-mile track. The competitors
kept the racing, for the most part, clean, with a few minor
incidents.
