Saturday, October 07, 2006 (West
Salem, WI) The third day of action at the 37th Annual
Oktoberfest Weekend will be a memorable one as a 17-year-old got the
fans on their feet in an incredible win.
Landon Cassill got the fans on its feet as he passed Eddie Hoffman
on the last lap to capture the ASA Late Model North Oktoberfest 100
Presented by Peterbilt of La Crosse.
Cassill started fifth and stayed in the top-three
throughout the event. Hoffman, who was the fast qualifier started
eighth and took over the top spot from Trent Snyder on lap 36.
Cassill would get by Snyder for second with nine laps to go and
quickly chased down Hoffman. The caution would fly with 4 laps to go
for a melee coming out of turn four. Hoffman got a great jump on the
re-start over Cassill, but it only Cassill a lap to catch up to him.
As the two came off of turn four to get the white flag, Hoffman
would get loose and it opened the door on the inside for Cassill.
Cassill would make the pass for the lead and go on to take the
checkered flag over Hoffman. Snyder would hold on for third with
Derek Thorn and Jim Duchow rounding out the top five.
I havent been too good on the re-starts all night, I have been a
little sluggish, Cassill stated in victory lane. I swung it wide
going into three and cut it down going into four and it was just
enough to get by him. With all of the respect, it has more meaning
to beat him for the win.
The car got tighter and tighter, Hoffman stated. I hit the gas
coming off of four, got loose and Landon was on the inside.
Jesse Smith claimed the 2006 ASA Late Model North Championship.
Two Wisconsin racing legends competed in a best two out of three
drudge race. Seven-time ARTGO Champion and two-time Champ Jim Weber
put on a show for the large crowd in attendance.
Weber won the coin toss and took the inside for the first four-lap
race. Weber would hold off Trickle for the win. The two veterans
swapped starting positions and it was Trickle taking the second win.
The fans got involved in the tie-breaker and cheered for Trickle to
get the inside line. Weber got on the inside of Trickle on the
second lap but Trickle would shut the door going in to turn three.
Weber would try as they came off the fourth turn but Trickle was
able to hold him off at the line.
Earlier in the day, Weber stated that the two were competing for
each others social security checks.
In Wisconsin Late Model action, Mark Eswein set a new track record
in Faster than a Speeding Bullet qualifying with a time of 18.997
seconds (103.332 mph). Steve Holzhausen was second with a time of
19.062 seconds (102.980 mph) and Jason Weinkauf was third with a
time of 19.067 seconds (102.953 mph). A total of 61 cars registered
to compete with 57 taking qualifying times.
Dean Cornelius, Neil Knoblock, Trent Snyder, and Adam Royal each won
qualifying heats and earned a spot into the 100-lap feature event on
Sunday.
Nick Hammer took home the Odd Heat and Jacob Goede won the even heat
for the cars already qualified into the main event.
Doug Brown made his trip from Savage, MN a worthwhile one as he
captured the Mid-American Series win at Fest.
Kenny Joosten was the early leader in the season ending 35-lap
feature event for the traveling series. Brown quickly worked his way
up to challenge Joosten for the top spot on lap 12. Three laps
later, he would work the outside lane to get by Joosten coming off
of turn four to take over the top spot.
Brown would go on to hold off a late challenge from Johnny Senerchia
on his way to the victory. Bobby Gutknecht would come home third
with Joosten finishing fourth. Jake Finney would round out the top
five.
James Swan was crowned the 2006 Mid-American Series Champion.
Gutknecht led qualifying for the Mid-American Series with a time of
20.732 seconds (94.685 mph). Billy Tuckwell, Jerry Wenzel, Doug
Brown, and Justin Neisius took home heat wins.
Larry Bolster took home the La Crosse Sportsman 20-lap feature
event.
Bolster started on the front row and took the early lead. Bolster
piloted his 1963 Chevrolet Biscayne throughout the event while
holding off a late race challenge from Chad Rosendahl.
On the last lap, Rosendahl did everything he could to get Bolster.
But Bolster would stay strong in front and take the checkered flag.
Chand Wehling came home third with Keith Kirchner and Emily Sue
Steck rounded out the top five.
The final day of racing will get underway with an on-track autograph
session at 9:15 a.m. and racing starting at Noon. The Wisconsin Late
Models, Modifieds, La Crosse Late Models, and Midwest Supertrucks
will be in action.
