Holzhausen Captures first win of 2006 at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway By Jon Compton

(West Salem, WI – May 20, 2006) - Veteran driver Steve Holzhausen, of Bangor, Wisconsin, took top honors at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway on Saturday night, May 20th. In what turned out to be a duel of the Steves, it was Holzhausen edging points leader Steve Carlson of West Salem in the Majestic Pines Casino-Bingo-Hotel 25 lap main event.

As the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models lined up for the Majestic Pines 25, the crowd was on the edge of their seats for the first race in two weeks as last week’s program was rained out. All 27 qualifying cars started the race, with Tim Hagen of La Crescent, Minn., on the pole. Holzhausen, who started on the outside of the second row, took the lead on lap 4 and held it the remainder of the race, claiming the Outback Steakhouse Half-Way Challenge and eventually the checkered flag. Although he did not relinquish the lead, he received late race pressure from Carlson. “I looked in my mirror a time or two and could see him coming,” commented Holzhausen, “and that was when he really cut down on my lead.” Mark Lamoreaux and Todd Oliver came together in turn four on lap 19 bringing out the only caution of the Late Model feature. Carlson, who started third, lost some distance to Holzhausen on the restart, but was able to hold the lead for the checkered flag. In four feature races this season, there have been four different winners in the Late Model Division.

Chand Wehling, recently a new father, proved once again that he is a contender for the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman Division championship as he claimed the checkered flag in the 15-lap feature race. Wehling edged Dan Linehan, who took second, and Jes Tenner, who claimed third. The Sportsman races were generally without incident – except for a restart in the B feature -- Saturday night. During the B-Feature the No. 8 car of Nick Clements got spun in between turns one and two. On the restart, the drivers barreled out of the corner and pushed it to the limit when Jerimy Wagner and Rob Curran got together, which created a chain reaction and collected several other cars.

Two weeks ago during the A-Main the pole car spun on the first lap, taking out several contenders.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature was full of bumping and grinding, as 24 cars started the 15-laps of metal mangling mayhem known as the feature race. The No. 2 truck of Ron Heller and No. 53 of Jeff Stumlin tangled on lap 5, slid into the turn 3 infield, creating a cloud of dust, and thrilling the crowd.

The Thunderstox drivers also had a chance to run a Double Spin to win Novelty race. It proved to have plenty of spills but Adam Moore and Steve Owen, who both spun out twice during the race, came away the big winners. Rosie Zakem of West Salem, Wis., won the annual Queen Bees race.
