LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway Race Report

Lamoreaux squeezes out win at La Crosse

By Megan Mullikin

(West Salem, WI – May 27, 2006) - Mark Lamoreaux scored his second feature win of the 2006 season during the LaCrosse Tribune night at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Lamoreaux was able to hold off a hard charging J. Herbst to take the top spot. “We had a great set up tonight for the first half of the race, but then the car began to develop a push and I saw J. closing in” stated Lamoreaux. “It was just our night” he added.

J. Herbst started the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model La Crosse Tribune Feature 25-lap main event on the pole. He took the lead position at the start with Lamoreaux close on his tail. The estimated crowd of 2700 was quickly on its feet as Lamoreaux squeezed by Herbst to take the lead on lap 4. Herbst did not yield the top spot quietly as he continued to pressure Lamoreaux on the outside. As the top two were battling for position, Jon Barrette motored his Dodge Charger into the third slot and closed the gap between his car and the top two. “I was hoping Mark and J. would drive each other too hard and allow me an easy way to the lead, but they ran a great race and we are proud of our third place run,” explained Barrette, Andy Burgess crossed the line in forth after a hard fought battle with fifth place finisher, and points leader, Steve Carlson.

The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman La Crosse Tribune Feature was probably the most exciting of the night. Boomer Olson and Jamie Millis took off from the start and battled door-handle to door-handle for the first several laps. Millis’ top spot was short lived, as he spun between corners 3 and 4. On the restart it was new track record holder John Olson and Lucas Korish fighting for the top spot. Their battle was one of the best in recent memory, as they raced side by side for the lead for nearly ten laps of the 15 lap feature. With three laps to go, Olson finally managed to pass Korish in turn three and held on for his second victory of the 2006 season.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature was a thriller from the wave of the green to the checkered. Fan favorite Joey Johnson, of Mindoro, was able to finish ahead of Andy Barney to be the first car to earn the checkered flag. However, post race inspection found the Johnson car too light and Barney inherited the win. The race had one incident, where Ben Allen’s Chevrolet Station wagon was spun mid-pack, which ended with the car of Charles Vian and a hard hit with the frontstretch wall.

The Novelty Event of the night was the Thunderstox Outhouse Race. Taking top honors was Mike Krueger Jr., coming away with the fastest time, and earning the Golden Plunger Award presented by Magic Valley Speedway. Drivers were required to run halfway around the quarter mile track and get out of their car, run into the outhouse, grab a handful of toilet paper, and returning to their car to drive across the finish line. Krueger was the top gun for the event, and accomplished all of this in a time of 25.934 seconds.
