Carlson Wins His 4th Feature of the Season; Takes Point Lead

By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, June 16, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Steve Carlson won the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature Saturday night making this his fourth win for the season. Carlson also gained the lead in the point standings for the division. He was tied for the lead with Kevin Nuttleman (20th) after the feature last week.

Photo Highlights

Carlson started in the sixth position and quickly moved to the second position. Around lap five Carlson was out front and had to fight off the advances of Mark Lamoreaux (2nd) and Andy Burgess (3rd) who threatened to take over the lead multiple times. But by the end of the night it was Carlson who walked away with the win.

A caution was brought out when the green flagged dropped at the beginning of the race. Emily Sue Steck (11th), who started on the front row, got loose on the front stretch, and behind her multiple cars got together. Skylar Holzhausen (21st), Kevin Nuttleman, and Chris Skrede (22nd) along with many others had severe damage to their cars. Nuttleman was able to bring his car back out on the track around lap seven but was not able to keep pace with the leaders and eventually went back to the pits. A second and final caution came out with eleven laps to go when Tim Groth spun coming out of turn two. After the restart Steve Holzhausen caught and passed Mike Carlson (son of Steve Carlson) in five laps taking the 4th place finishing position. Mike Carlson finished 5th.
Jimmy Gilster won the North Country Contractors Sportsmen race.

Rob Curran finished half a car length in front of Gilster, but was disqualified after post race inspection. Curran and Gilster were battling with each other all race long. They, along with Jamie Millis, were able to pull away from the rest of the pack with three laps to go. Despite his best efforts Gilster wasn’t able to pass Curran in the end. Lucas Korish and Randy Humfeld were in their own battle fighting for the fourth position. Korish was able to hold onto the fourth place position when the checkered flag waved, but Korish, Humfeld, and Millis were also disqualified after post race inspection. As a result, this made winner Jimmy Gilster, Todd Lockington (2nd), Rick Schermerhorn (3rd), Larry Bolster Jr. (4th), and Dan Gilster (5th) the official top five.

Jason Bolster won the United Auto Supply Thunderstox race after fighting his way to the front from a mid-pack starting position. Lydia Eddy (24th) started on the pole, but Andy Barney (2nd) took over the lead on the first lap. Three laps later, Eddy got loose in turn three and was able to save it but fell back multiple positions. By lap seven Bolster was in the third position when the front two leaders started to pull away. A caution two laps later brought the field back together and Bolster was able to get around third place finisher Josh Inglett to challenge Barney for the lead. Both cars were side by side for two laps, but Bolster was able to inch his car in front of Barney’s for the win. Shane Ulvestad finished 4th and Jamie Dummer 5th.
