Nuttleman Comes Back With Win at LaCrosse

By: Dave Noelke

Saturday, June 23, 2007 (West Salem, WI) –
Last week at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, ten time Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model Champion Kevin Nuttleman left with a rare torn up race car. He was involved in a multi car wreck at the start of the feature. This week’s fortunes, however, were much better, as the sixth place starter was able to make his way to the front for his first feature win of the 2007 season.
The Clason Pontiac 25 started off with last week’s pole starter, teammate Emily Sue Steck on the pole again.

On lap three, Steck lost control of her car in turn three as she was undergoing a challenge from Brent Kirchner for the lead. Other cars involved in the melee included Todd Korish and J. Herbst. All were able to continue. Kirchner resumed the lead until lap nine, when Nuttleman took his car to the inside of turn four and into the lead. Third place Steve Holzhausen tried to follow Nuttleman around Kirchner but was not able to for two more laps. Meanwhile, point leader Steve Carlson, who started ninth, was quickly closing in on the leaders, making his way up to third by lap eighteen. Nuttleman was able to hold off a late race charge by Steve Holzhausen to take the checkered flag in the Clason Pontiac 25.

“I saw Steve coming in my mirror with two to go, but fortunately, he didn’t have enough time to catch me,” commented Nuttleman after the race. “This is a whole lot better than last week’s results, that’s for sure,” concluded Nuttleman, after taking his first feature win of the 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season. Holzhausen charged to a second place, while Carlson, Mark Lamoreaux, and Kirchner rounded out the top five.

The North Country Contractors Grand National Sportsmen Clason Buick 15 was full of its usual exciting side-by-side racing. Nick Clements got out to an early lead, while last year’s Rookie of the Year, Randy Humfeld, was quick in tow. Clements fought off several lead challenges by Humfeld, and through two yellows was able to stay in the top spot. A close call occurred on lap five when Ken Lewis and Rob Mason touched in turns three and four, but all cars narrowly escaped incident. The hardest hit during the race was when Rick Schermerhorn went into the turn two wall with two laps to go, bringing out the second yellow. Jes Tenner went on to take the win, just one week after he voluntarily chose not to race, resulting in him losing the runner-up spot in the season point standings. The top five was completed by Humfeld, Clements, Jamie Millis and Jerimy Wagner.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstox Clason GMC Truck 15 began with Robert Stanfield on the pole and point leader Jamie Dummer in the back. On lap four, a multi-car tangle in turn two resulted in six cars’ having trouble, worst of them being Andy Barney and Joey Johnson. A two car incident slowed the pace again on lap seven, and on the restart, point leader Dummer was closing in on the leaders. By lap 10, Dummer was up to third, while Matt Moore was in the lead over Dean Ashbacher. Those three were able to finish in that order, while the Inglett Trio – Matt, Josh and father Bill finished third through sixth.
