Kirchner Wins His First Feature of the Season
By: Dave Noelke

Saturday, June 30, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Brent Kirchner won the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature with a finish that had the crowd on their feet Saturday Night at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Kirchner held the lead over Todd Korish (2nd) and Andy Burgess (3rd) when they crossed the finish line three wide. Kirchner was able to get a good start when the green flag dropped. Toward the middle of the race he had a 20 car length lead over the rest of the field, but lapped traffic forced him to slow and lose the advantage he put between himself and second place. On the last lap Korish and Burgess were able to catch Kirchner and threatened to pass but when the checkered flag waved it was Kirchner in the lead.

All of the drivers were driving as hard as they could to gain any and all positions possible. Korish was in a 20 lap battle with Mark Lamoreaux for 2nd. Although Lamoreaux, who finished 5th, wasn’t able to take over the position, he was able to hold on to 3rd until Burgess passed him with five laps to go. Kevin Nuttleman and Steve Carlson were able to move through the field together after being shuffled to the middle of the pack at the beginning of the race. In the end Nuttleman was able to pass Lamoreaux and finish in the 4th position; Carlson finished 6th.

Rookie Rick Schermerhorn won his first ever feature in the North Country Contractors Sportsmen division. Schermerhorn, a rookie this season, was able to take the lead after a first lap caution that resulted in a side by side complete restart. Branden Berg fought him on the restart but wasn’t able to edge himself into the lead; he finished 2nd. Jamie Millis (3rd), Jerimy Wagner (4th) and Randy Humfeld (5th) round out the top five. The thrill of the night for the fans came early in the race when Rob Curran (23rd) and Ken Lewis (24th) were racing side by side and both were forced into the wall. Curran’s car didn’t stop. It went up and over the wall in turn three taking out a billboard along the way. The fans stood quiet until Curran climbed onto the wall to wave at the fans. Lewis also walked away from the wreck unharmed.

Ed Senn won the United Auto Supply Thunderstox division race. Instead of being the last race of the night as usual, the race was run before the Late Model feature due to a fireworks celebration after racing was finished. Within the first two laps the two cars of Ray Burkum and Cole Scholze were in the wall. The first brought out a caution and the second gave leader Senn a chance to pull away from the rest of the field. It didn’t last long though. A caution later in the race brought the field back together and Senn had to battle to keep himself in the lead over 2nd place finisher Brad Warthan. Steve Bornitz was able to walk away with a 3rd place finish while Raymond Hardy finished 4th and Matt Inglett 5th.

La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway is preparing for a huge crowd Tuesday, July 3rd when the ASA Midwest Tour comes to town.
