Mark Eswein took the initial lead from the outside of the
front row to lead the first three laps of the Independence
Day Kwik Trip 100 ASA Midwest Tour Super Late Model race
before mayhem befell in turn one, wadding Joey Johnson up
into the wall ending the young driver’s night. Eswein held
onto the point at the restart and just three laps later,
NASCAR Busch East Series driver Tim Schendel spun solo from
his second place running spot, bringing out the yellow
caution flag for a second time. At the restart, one lap was
completed before Trevor Stewart, Andy Niles, and Schendel
were thrust into the turn three wall. Ambulance service
responded to the scene and all drivers were okay. Racing
resumed and on lap twelve 1993 NASCAR Busch Series Champion
Steve Grissom took turn one high, wide, and hansom, slowing
the field for the fourth time.
It took thirteen laps of competition to lay down enough
Hoosier rubber to work the green track into race condition.
Dan Fredrickson took over the top spot on lap thirteen. He
picked off lapped traffic as best he could to gain four car
lengths over Eswein and Eugene Gregorich. Grissom again went
high on lap 35 and stopped up at the turn two wall. At the
green, Fredrickson tried to open his lead once again but
only had four laps before Neil Knoblock slowed erratically
on the backstretch and Echo Outdoor Power Equipment “Blow
Your Competition Away” fast qualifier Josh Vadnais had to
stop abruptly, resulting in both Vadnais and Adam Royle
spinning down into the infield. There were still 28 cars
running at halfway. On lap 51, Rich Bickle turned into Russ
Blakely and both ran into the turn one wall slowing the
field for the seventh time.
For Nathan Haseleu, race nights are either really good or
really bad with not much in between. Haseleu wins more races
than many of his competitors in a single season year after
year, but the list of “should have been” good finishes is
just as long. Tonight was one of the bad nights. Haseleu had
charged up through the field to battle for the third spot
with Dean Cornelius on lap 53 and it was a tight battle down
the front stretch but something had to give and the Fourth
of July Fireworks erupted early in turn two in front of the
race-speed field. The running order was a pack of sixteen at
the restart and the rocket man Dan Fredrickson was on fire,
opening up a sizable lead over Steve Holzhausen.
The 47 laps that followed were a walk in the park for
Fredrickson. Six cars finished on the lead lap.
All preliminary events were canceled due to 1.70 inches of
rain pouring during the afternoon hours, precipitation

Dan Fredrickson Profile
For a racer under the age of thirty, Dan is quite the
veteran with an impressive resume. In 2000, he entered the
final seven races at the Elko Speedway and won the last five
of them. In 2001, he started traveling and won Rookie of the
Year honors in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Series Midwest
division with four Bud Pole awards, ten top-five, and four
top-three finishes. In 2002, he moved on to the American
Speed Association National Tour and recorded twelve
top-five, and three podium finishes and also set the track
record at the Wisconsin International Raceway. In 2003, Dan
returned to Elko Speedway to top the competition, earning
the Late Model Championship with 12 pole awards and six
wins, including the Featherlite Ultimate Challenge.
Fredrickson entered three Midwest AllStar Racing Series
events in 2004 and won every one of them, including the
event at the legendary Milwaukee Mile. He won twelve Super
Late Model events overall during the season including four
ASA Minnesota Late Model Challenge Series races, good for
the Series championship and was voted Minnesota Driver of
the Year.
In 2006 Dan had a breakout year, winning three of the final
six NASCAR AutoZone Elite Series Midwest races, setting the
track record at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, finishing
third in the Toyota All Star Showdown, winning Powerade
Racer of the Year, and finishing runner-up to the
Championship by a margin of two points.
