Lamoreaux holds off Holzhausen for the Win
By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, July 7, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Mark Lamoreaux won the Quillins 25 Late Model feature Saturday night at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. He started in the seventh position and was up to third within three laps. On lap 4 he worked his way around the #97 of Mike Carlson (9th), who started on the pole. As a result Carlson ended up out of the draft and fell back to the 7th position; Lamoreaux took over the 2nd position.

Photo Highlights

At about the half way point he started to look to the inside of leader Steve Holzhausen (2nd) and passed him in turn 4. Lamoreaux was able to hang on to the lead despite the quick advances of 3rd place finisher Steve Carlson and 4th place finisher Kevin Nuttleman. Todd Korish was able to work his way forward from a ninth place starting position to finish 5th.

There were only two cautions of the night, the first for sparks coming off the #3 car of Dean Cota (26th) and the other on lap 6 when Albert Locy (25th) spun in turn 4. The last 19 laps were full of uninterrupted racing. On lap 10 rookie Keith Kirchner fell off the pace, he finished 23rd. The next lap Nuttleman looked to the inside of Brent Kirchner (8th) for 5th followed by Steve Carlson. Kirchner’s car got loose but he was able to save it and avoid a wreck. After passing Kirchner, Nuttleman and Carlson quickly passed third place Todd Korish. As the leaders began to pull away Carlson closed the gap on Nuttleman and passed him on the inside in turn three. Despite all efforts and lap traffic Carlson wasn’t able to catch the leaders. Andy Burgess, who is fourth in point standings, had a 6th place finish.

Dan Gilster won the North Country Contractors Sportsmen division race just feet ahead of Ken Lewis. The race started with a caution on the first lap. Nick Clements (21st) and Rick Schermerhorn (10th) got together along the front stretch and ended up in the inside wall. Todd Lockington (19th) and Jimmy Gilster (23rd) also spun out and Lockington ended up joining Clements and Schermerhorn in the wall. A second caution came out on lap five when Rob Mason (13th) spun in turn four. The field was brought back together for the restart and the front six began to pull away nose to tail. There was an intense battle between Dan Gilster and Branden Berg (4th) for the second position. With four to go Gilster passed Berg on the outside. The next lap Berg went back around Gilster.

hen Glister shot past Berg again and was able to pass Lewis (2nd) on the outside for the win. Randy Humfled finished in the 3rd position and Jamie Millis finished 5th.

Jamie Dummer moved his way up from a mid-pack starting position to win the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. At the start of the race leader Chris Weber, who was later disqualified, started to pull away from the rest of the field, but a caution half way through brought the field together. Then, with seven laps to go, Dummer had moved up to take third away from Steve Owen(3rd). Three laps later he was still in the third position but was able to get around Harley Jankowski (2nd) for the win. Steve Bornitz (4th) and Bill Inglett (5th) round out the top five.

The Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornets division also raced this week. Jeff Heaney of Caledonia, Minn. was able to hang onto the lead to win the first of two feature races. Mike Peters came in second. The second Hornets feature was won by Jim Schermerhorn; he also won his heat earlier in the night. Pete Muenkel finished second.
