Point Leader Carlson Stays on Top at La Crosse
By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, July 28, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Steve Carlson (West Salem) got his fifth Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model win of the season Saturday putting on a great show for one of the biggest crowds of the year at La Crosse Speedway. It was his first win in five races; the longest he has gone all season to get a win. Carlson started eighth and almost got taken out on lap two when Emily Sue Steck (Holmen) got loose on the front stretch making the rest of the field get together.

The cars were piled up accordion style, but were able to keep moving without bringing out a caution. Carlson started to move his way through the top ten after that and was to the fifth position two laps later. When lap traffic caused everyone to slow Carlson took advantage and within 10 laps was on the bumper of leader Todd Korish (Holmen). Carlson quickly moved to the high side of Korish and when one got their nose out front the other surged forward to take the position back. Carlson was eventually able to edge around Korish and managed to fend him off to take the checkered flag.

It seemed as though every driver was knocked loose at least once during the race. The top ten pushed as much as they could without losing control of their car. Andy Burgess (Fall Creek) was toward the front of the field all night along with Steve Holzhausen (Bangor; 3rd). Both got much needed top five finishes to keep up with point leader Steve Carlson; though Burgess almost lost his position. On the last lap Kevin Nuttleman (Bangor) caught up to Burgess and tried to pass him coming out of turn four. Although they were side by side at the finish line it was Burgess who finished 5th behind Mark Lamoreaux (Bloomington, Minn.).

Jerimy Wagner (Melrose) won his first North Country Contractors Sportsmen feature of the season. It wasn’t easy considering the entire field kept shuffling themselves around. Drivers were being passed left and right and some found themselves in a position they had just vacated multiple times. With seven to go Wagner was in the lead and fighting off the advances of Jamie Millis (Black River Falls). Although lap traffic slowed the pace Wagner was able to stay out front and get the win. Millis finished 2nd, Aaron Hass 3rd, Jes Tenner 4th, and Randy Humfeld 5th.

The United Auto Supply Thuderstox feature was won by Steve Bornitz (West Salem). Bornitz was able to make his way from fifth to first in less than nine laps through what at times appeared more like a demolition derby. Three wide racing caused a lot of the bumping and banging. At one point Kris Buldhaupt (La Crosse) was pinched in the middle of six other cars with no where to go. Buldhaupt (19th) was then shuffled to the back but was able to hold onto his car avoiding what easily could have brought out a caution. Joey Johnson, Brad Warthan, Bill Inglett, and Raymond Hardy round out the top five.

The Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornet division were in attendance Saturday to bring the fans more exciting racing. They too were doing a lot of pushing and shoving on the track and were able to keep cautions to a minimum. Wade Elliot won the first Hornet feature along with the first heat race. Nicki Hagen won the second feature.

On Saturday, August 4th regular racing will continue, it will also be the first Trailer Race of Destruction of the season. Drivers will be pulling boats, pop-ups, campers or utility trailers in a race that is sure to be mayhem. Special event admission is $12; kids ages 6-11 are $4.
