Burgess Wins by Inches at La Crosse
By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, August 11, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Andy Burgess of Fall Creek, Wis. won the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature by just inches over La Crosse’s Brad Powell - in what was one of the closest finishes ever at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Burgess started in the second position and made quick work in taking over the lead.

With only six to go he started to catch lap traffic and two laps later Powell was on his bumper weaving back and forth trying to throw Burgess off and be able to get around him. Powell was able to pull up beside Burgess, and tried to pass him coming out of turn four on the last lap. Burgess had the advantage though. In a post race interview Burgess said “I knew I had a run on him on the low side…I had him then.” Powell finished in the 2nd position.

For the rest of the field it was simply a race to get into and finish in the top five. It wasn’t an easy feat though. Drivers were switching positions every time you blinked. They were weaving in and out of each other just trying to get an edge on anyone and everyone. With four laps to go Kevin Nuttleman, who had been battling for fifth, took over the 3rd position and fast qualifier Steve Carlson took over the 4th position, just when it looked like he was going to suffer his worst finish of the 2007 season. Rounding out the top five was Sparta’s Shawn Pfaff.

Nick Clements won the North Country Contractors Grand National Sportsmen feature, presented by United Building Centers. A five car breakaway separated the top ten in the race with the top five. A late race caution bunched up the field, after Jerrod Loging and Rick Johnson Jr. collided in turn one. On the restart, Clements regained the lead. The last two laps saw a challenge by La Crescent’s Rob Mason, who was gunning for his first ever feature win. Clements was able to charge ahead on the last lap, leaving Mason side by side with third place finisher Rick Schermerhorn. Finishing 4th and 5th were Branden Berg and Randy Humfeld.

Chad Oehler of La Crosse won his first United Auto Supply Thunderstox race during 2007. He started in the third position but had to work his way back from deep in the field. No one seemed to stay in one position for too long. They shuffled themselves up so much cars were getting loose and spinning on nearly every lap since the half way point. A caution didn’t come out until two to go when Jason Schaller (Holmen) and Ray Hardy (Sparta) got together in turn two and hit the wall. In the end it was Oehler who crossed the line first followed by Shane Ulvestad (2nd), Kris Buldhaupt (3rd), Danielle Neary (4th), and Josh Inglett (5th).

The Trailer Race of Destruction was run Saturday night due to a rain postponement the previous week. The first lap was just a little pushing and shoving but by the next lap boats were flying and campers were being torn apart. Many cars got stuck in debris. No one went down easy though and it lasted several laps. When the checkered flag waved it was hard to tell who the winner was; none of the trailers were fully intact and the track looked like a tornado had just ripped through. It was determined in the end though that Jason Pyka had the least damage and he was declared the official winner.

Saturday, August 18th will be filled with exciting racing from beginning to end with the Sportsmen and Thunderstox divisions along with a Special 30 lap Late Model feature. Also in attendance will be the Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornets division. Then on Saturday, August 25th regular racing will continue with a brand new Novelty event that promises to surprise and excite fans and drivers alike.
