Carlson, Burgess Win Double Feature at La Crosse
By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, August 25, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Steve Carlson of West Salem won the first of two 20 lap Late Model features Saturday. He started mid-pack but was still able to get to the front five laps sooner than normal. By lap five he had moved himself into the 7th position. Carlson started picking off cars left and right. He then passed Dan Steele, also of West Salem, for the lead with five laps left to go. Steele didn’t go down easy; he tried to take back the lead but he was unable to succeed in the task and finished 2nd. Mike Carlson finished 3rd, Skylar Holzhausen 4th, and Kevin Nuttleman 5th.

Three cautions throughout the race helped Carlson get to the front bringing the field back together each time. The first caution was on lap four when Matthew Henderson and Tom Thill got together entering turn four. Both cars slammed into the wall and came back across the track. The second caution was one lap later when Dean Cota spun in turn two. Cota was able to finish the race. The last caution came out with six laps to go when Mark Lamoreaux and Todd Korish were battling for 2nd and Korish spun just tapping Lamoreaux. Lamoreaux was then sent to the back of the field. All drivers were able to walk away from the crashes.

The second of the two Late Model features was won by Andy Burgess (Fall Creek), who finished 6th in the first feature. He had to fight to keep his lead though. First he had to shake off Skylar Holzhausen and Kevin Nuttleman who were quickly advancing when the leader got caught up in lap traffic. Then Burgess had to keep Steve Carlson behind him. Carlson was again quickly moving forward to try to win both races of the double feature. Two cautions during the race brought Carlson right to the leaders, but Paul Proksch kept Carlson busy while Burgess took off with the lead. Proksch finished 2nd, Steve Carlson 3rd, Skylar Holzhausen 4th, and Mike Carlson finished 5th.
The second Late Model feature produced the biggest wreck of the night. Emily Sue Steck and Todd Oliver were entering turn three and as Oliver went to pass Steck the back end of Steck’s car got loose and hit the wall. The front end of her car then came around and climbed onto the wall; a billboard stopped her from going over. In the end Steck’s car had two wheels on each side of the wall and Oliver’s car took a hard hit in the wall. Both drivers walked away OK, but the same can’t be said for their cars.

Larry Bolster Jr. of Sparta walked away Saturday with the North Country Contractors Sportsmen feature win. He made quick work out of picking off the leader then held it while the battle raged behind him. Dan Gilster and Aaron Hass were trading paint all night trying to get into the second position to battle for the lead. Hass was loose at one point and sliding sideways through the turn but was able to save it and still keep pace with Gilster. With only three laps to go Jes Tenner stepped in and took over the 3rd position knocking Gilster back to 4th; both finished in those positions. Hass finished in 2nd and Brand Berg rounded out the top five.

Steve Bornitz (West Salem) won the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. Bornitz had to fight his way to the front around all the pushing, shoving and three wide racing. He quickly pulled away from the rest of the field and was able to keep a good cushion due to an unexpected caution free race. By the end of the race there was a gathering in the infield from cars spinning and wrecking, but none were severe enough to bring out a caution. Bornitz was able to move around all of the lap traffic and walk away with a win. Chris Weber finished 2nd, Tony Wheeler 3rd, Josh Inglett 4th and Matt Moore 5th.

There will be two 50 lap features in order to determine who will earn the title of 2007 Late Model Champion.
