Carlson Sweeps Double Feature at La Crosse Clenching the Track Championship
By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, September 1, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Steve Carlson of West Salem won both 50 lap Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model features Saturday at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Carlson also clenched the Track Championship by 92 points over teammate Kevin Nuttleman (Bangor). In the first feature Carlson started eighth directly behind Nuttleman. By lap six Carlson was on the bumper of Nuttleman trying to take the 3rd position.

Photo Highlights

Carlson passed Nuttleman on the high side and within three laps had charged to 2nd. Steve Holzhausen, then leader, wasn’t going to let Carlson get by easy. It took Carlson multiple tries going low then high. Turn three turned out to be the magic spot for Carlson; he was able to dip low to the inside of Holzhausen then completed the pass in turn four. Carlson put a fairly large gap between him and the rest of the field. With fifteen to go Nuttleman seemed to come alive making a strong charge toward Carlson and catching him six laps later. Nuttleman gave it his all trying each groove to see if he could get around Carlson, but it wasn’t in the cards. Nuttleman finished in the 2nd position followed by Steve Holzhausen, Andy Burgess and Bradley Powell.

The second Late Model Feature proved even harder to win then the first. Carlson started 12th and was much slower getting into the top five. When he finally did break into the top five everyone worked as hard as they could keeping Carlson back as they tried to work themselves into the lead. Carlson was able to get around Nuttleman for third then tried to get by Burgess for second. Although he was caught behind Burgess for a while both were able to get around leader Paul Proksch. The field was brought together due to a caution and on the restart Carlson blew past Burgess as though he was holding back the first half of the race. A late caution brought the field back together and brought Nuttleman to the back bumper of Carlson. In the end it was teammates battling for the win each trying to gain a very important landmark; Carlson is battling for the National Late Model Championship and Nuttleman is trying his hardest to get his 100th career feature win. Nuttleman finished 2nd in the second feature (and championship points). Burgess finished 3rd, Holzhausen 4th and Proksch 5th.

Some of the other drivers had pretty successful nights also. Andy Burgess finished 4th and then 3rd in the features therefore ending the season 3rd in points. Steve Holzhausen was another driver who had a lot of success finishing 3rd and then 4th in the features. Holzhausen ends his season 4th in the points moving up a spot from last week. The two top 10 finishes Paul Proksch got Saturday moved him up two spots in the points from 8th to 6th were he completes his season.

Of course not everyone could have a great night, but Mike Carlson probably had the worst of all the drivers. Two laps into the first feature Mike Carlson spun out on the front stretch. It would have been ok and only a loss of a few positions if he could have saved it, but he couldn’t. The back end of his car went up onto the inside wall and momentum caused the car to flip onto its roof. As if that wasn’t enough the car then caught fire with Carlson still inside. The fire was quickly extinguished and Carlson climbed out only slightly shaken. He started the second feature in an alternate car but was able to complete only four laps before calling it quits. As a result Carlson lost a position in the end of the year standings dropping down to 10th. Not bad, but not as good as he had hoped for at the beginning of the season.

Rick Schermerhorn (Westby) left Saturday with a feature win in the North Country Contractors Sportsmen Division. At the beginning of the race Schermerhorn was battling side by side with Todd Lockington. When Lockington pulled into the lead Schermerhorn was all over his back bumper. Schermerhorn was then able to take the lead and keep it through a restart and around lap traffic. With three to go Jamie Millis challenged Lockington for the 2nd position. Lockington tried everything to keep the position but when they crossed the finish line Millis was just slightly in front taking 2nd. Lockington was 3rd, Rob Curran 4th and Dan Gilster 5th.

Jason Stark won his first United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature of the season. Stark seemed to be glued to the side of Jake Krueger (Onalaska) for the majority of the race. They started side by side on the front row and stayed that way even when lap traffic forced the two leaders to go three wide through the corners. After all the pushing, shoving and rubbing Stark was finally able to get around Krueger with four to go. Krueger tried but couldn’t get back around Stark; Krueger clenched the 2nd finishing position. Matt Cleveland finished 3rd, Kris Buldhaupt 4th and Ray Hardy 5th.
