Eve of Destruction Fills the Grandstands at La Crosse Speedway
By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, September 8, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – The stands were filled to capacity Saturday night for La Crosse Speedways Eve of Destruction. The action filled night kept the fans on their feet throughout many different events. The night began with the four Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornet heats. Each driver was trying as hard as they could to get into one of the feature races later that night. When the time came for the feature races the drivers were definitely ready to get started.

Photo Highlights

Mark Bornitz won the first feature after starting mid-pack and working his way to the front. Mike Peters had to fight his way to the front through eighteen cars and multiple cautions to win the second feature. Chris Swenson was able to walk away with the third feature win after finishing 5th in the fourth heat race.

The Thunderstox division came out Saturday to astonish the crowd with a couple of different novelty races. The first were two different 2nd Over the Line races; the only race in which drivers want to cross the line second – not first. As the cars came around to get the checkered flag the leaders were hard on their brakes. The cars following the leaders were then forced to either battle with the leaders or push them across the line. Brad Warthan (Sparta) won the first race and Steve Bornitz (Holmen) won the second race. Thuderstox also had a Flag Pole Race in which the drivers were to circle flag poles that were placed in the middle of the track as they took each lap. The most exciting Thunderstox events for both the fans and drivers were the two Double Spin to Win races. During the six lap race drivers were to spin out on two different designated laps, if they failed to do so they were eliminated. Brad Warthan spun his car, as successfully as one can when surrounded by fifteen other cars, to win the first race. Steve Bornitz was able to stay ahead of all of the other spinning cars to take the second win.

One of the biggest attractions of the night was the Monster Trucks. Little Miss Dangerous beat Mechanical Mischief during the Monster Truck challenge. She pulled out of the pits with her strobe lights flashing and quickly went to work smashing the five cars out on the track. By the time she was done pouncing on the cars there didn’t appear to be much left for Mechanical Mischief to destroy on his first night out. But he was able to surprise the fans and practically pancake what was left of the cars. In the end he used his hydraulics to bow to the audience, but it just wasn’t enough. The fans choose Little Miss Dangerous as their winner. Later in the night both trucks made another appearance. While Little Miss Dangerous was doing doughnuts on the front stretch her truck tipped onto its side causing severe, but fixable, damage.

Another of the main attractions was the Green Mamba Jet Car. The first of its events was the Mamba Fire Show. It rode around the track shooting fire out of the back engine. The first burst of fire left you seeing spots and even from 50 yards away you could feel the heat coming from the car warm your face. Each eruption was also accompanied by a mini-earthquake that shook the tower. The fans got even more of the Green Mamba when it finished off the night. It sat in the middle of the infield with a car attached to the back. The first burst of fire sent a few sparks flying off the attached car. Shortly after there were sparks, smoke and chunks of metal flying off of the quickly melting car. In the end, when the smoke cleared, all that was left was a big chunk of deformed metal that used to be a car.

Racing wasn’t just left to the small cars though. The night also hosted a Bus Race and a Trailer Race of Destruction. During the Bus Race the buses seemed to herd together racing nose to emergency exit and knocking each other off balance in the corners. In the end two buses were side by side at the finish line and Matt Helgerson was determined the official winner. The Trailer Race of Destruction was once again chaotic and brutal. It didn’t take long for most trailers to be piled up and stuck in turn two. The destruction didn’t just stick to the trailers though. The race was red flagged when a car drove, not over, but through the turn three wall taking out about 15 feet of the barrier. After the wall was temporarily closed up the racing restarted. Surprisingly there were more than a few trailers left in the end. Deciding the winner was left up to the fans and the fan favorite was John Ratz.

Some of the smaller, but still as exciting, events of the night were the Steel Wall Crash when Ben Allen sent a car flipping through the air. The T-Bone crash sent daredevil Andy Moore flying though the air after jumping a ramp. He came down hard but was able to walk away. There was also a Roll Over Contest that Ren Revels won with a whopping 8 points.
Friday, September 14th another exciting night of Friday Night Street Drags will take place. Brackets include Pickup Trucks, Motorcycles, Tuner Cars, Domestic Cars, Detroit Iron (Muscle Cars), Open and Pros; plus a Burn-Out contest. Gates open at 6:00, practice runs at 6:30 and Drags begin at 7:30.
