Pfaff’s 13 year drought ends with victory at La Crosse

By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, May 12, 2007 (West Salem, WI) – Shawn Pfaff of Sparta won the NASCAR Late Models feature; holding off the rest of the field for the majority of the race. This was Pfaff’s first feature win in 13 years. Pfaff passed Jeff Baker (25th) for the lead on lap 5 and managed to hold off the advances of Steve Carlson (2nd) and points leader Kevin Nuttleman (3rd). Carlson and Nuttleman, teammates, moved through the field together then were side by side as the checkered flag waved. Andy Burgess finished in the 4th position and J. Herbst in 5th.

It wasn’t an easy race considering the six cautions of the night. The first and second cautions of the night were brought out by spins in turn two. On lap seven Tim Hagen (23rd) spun in turn three causing the third caution. The fourth caution was brought out by Todd Oliver (26th) spinning in turn four. As a result four cars were sent to the back. The fifth caution was on lap 12 when Joseph DeVito (27th) spun in turn 2 and three more cars had to go to the back. The final caution of the race was on lap 17 when Matthew Henderson (24th) hit the wall on the back stretch. After the race Pfaff commented on his win “It was the yellows that saved me. If we would have had a fifteen lap green flag run they would have all gotten by me.” (Referring to Nuttleman, Carlson and Burgess.) “I’m just glad we had a lot of yellows and I’d like to thank my supporters for keeping their faith in me since my last win,” concluded path.

Dan Gilster won the North Country Contractors Sportsmen race after passing his brother Jimmy Gilster on the outside in turn three of the last lap. The race was red flagged after three laps due to a pile up in the middle of turns three and four. Aaron Hass nudged Jamie Millis into Larry Bolster Jr. who spun and collected more than five cars including the 19 of Troy Maier, who is point leader in the race for the Rookie of the Year award.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstox race was won by Matt Cleveland who also won the second of three Thunderstox heats. After much pushing and shoving by the front five Matt Moore (20th), who was running fourth, was forced into the tire, then the wall, coming out of turn two bringing out the first caution of the race. The second caution was brought out on the restart when Chris Weber (19th) got into the back of leader Cole Scholze (17th) sending both of them spinning. That put Cleveland in the lead for the next restart.
