Steve Carlson Extends His
Points Lead with a Feature Win

July 12, 2008 (West Salem, WI)
- A large, enthusiastic crowd
watched in excitement as Steve
Carlson raced his way to the front
of the pack and narrowly held on to
the lead to win his 3rd Kwik Trip
NASCAR Late Model feature of the
season.
Shawn Pfaff started on the pole, but
quickly fell back making room for
Brent Kirchner to take over the
lead. By lap 6 Carlson was passing
Tony Bagstad for 4th.

At lap 12 the
front five were nose to tail.
Following the pack was Mike Carlson,
who started the race with right
front fender damage from a wreck in
a previous heat. With 8 to go Steve
Carlson and Kirchner were door
handle to door handle racing for the
lead. When he was finally able to
shake Kirchner it appeared as though
Steve Carlson was going to make a
nice cushion for himself, but then a
caution came out with 5 to go. Paul
Proksch spun in turn 2 creating a
five lap shootout to victory lane.
On the restart the front four began
to pull away from the field.
Kirchner and Kevin Nuttleman were in
a fierce battle for 2nd as Carlson
raced his way towards the checkered
flag. In an on track, post race
interview Nuttleman expressed his
displeasure with Kirchner. “I don’t
race people that way and I don’t
appreciate being raced that way”
said Nuttleman referring to the
contact between himself and
Kirchner. In the end it was Kirchner
who finished 2nd, Kevin Nuttleman
3rd, Mike Carlson 4th, and Shawn
Pfaff 5th.
The North Country Contractors
Sportsmen feature started off with a
bang. On the first lap John Olson
spun in turn two ultimately ending
his night early. As the race
restarted all of the drivers stayed
side by side. They wanted all of the
advantage they could get over the
other drivers. A second caution came
out on lap 4; Justin Berg lost
control of his car sending it into
the turn one wall. Once the race was
started again Jerimy Wagner was all
over the back bumper of leader Jimmy
Gilster. Wagner looked as if he was
glued to Gilster for the rest of the
race. Wagner went high and then low
trying to get around Gilster, but he
never found his chance. Gilster got
the win as Wagner, Branden Berg,
Nick Clements, and Matt Inglett
watched from behind.
Jason Schaller walked away Saturday
night with a United Auto Supply
Thunderstox feature win. The drivers
were very impatient, bumping and
banging before they got the green
flag. Within laps of the start
drivers moved into three wide
racing. The outside cars were inches
from the wall as they sped around
the ¼ mile oval. Many drivers
attempted to go four wide in the
corners but backed off before they
had the chance. On lap ten Brad
Warthan was surrounded by a swarm of
cars. He lost control of his car
bouncing off of the cars around him
bringing out the only caution of the
race. Cole Scholze was fast on the
restart and in the end crossed the
finish line first. Scholze failed to
pass post race inspection though,
making Schaller the official winner.
At the end of the night a few of the
drivers decide to participate in a
special event. An ongoing bet in the
infield led to multiple drivers
racing into Lake Speed (the infield
rain water buildup) trying to make
the biggest splash. Two of the
drivers went a step further and
belly flopped into the water off of
the hood of their cars, fire suits
and all. A fan poll led to
Thunderstox driver Steve Flickinger
being declared the winner.
