Win Number Four for Steve
Carlson

Saturday, July 19, 2008 (West Salem, WI) - Talent shows and cotton candy brought hundreds of people to the La Crosse Fairgrounds all week for the La Crosse Interstate fair. But, on Saturday night it was the thundering race cars and non-stop action of the La Crosse Speedway that urged the masses to come out despite the threat of rain.

Early Saturday
night radars showed a storm wall
headed directly towards West Salem,
but when it would hit no one knew.
So the drivers drove and the fans
cheered as the show went on. The
main event of the night being the 50
lap NASCAR Kwik Trip Late Models
feature. The dilemma for the Late
Model drivers was having to decide
between using the extra laps to get
to the front or out-race the weather
conditions. They did both. After the
green flag waved the drivers tested
the waters staying side by side for
a few laps. By lap five it was every
man for himself. J. Herbst took the
lead as Emily Sue Steck quickly
moved her car into the 3rd position.
The field was bumper to bumper as
Steve Carlson and Brent Kirchner
were weaving in and out of traffic
to get to the leader. By the half
way point the two had broke into the
top five. Tony Bagstad had been
running second when he lost momentum
and Kirchner and Carlson went around
him leaving Herbst as easy prey.
Carlson passed Kirchner while
keeping his sights on Herbst. With
16 to go Carlson caught and passed
Herbst for the lead in the middle of
turns one and two. Moments later a
caution came out giving Herbst a
chance to retake the lead. Kirchner
wouldn’t allow it. He stayed on the
tail of Herbst and was able to pass
directly after the restart. Kirchner
then started to run down Carlson in
hopes of passing and taking the
checkered for himself. As the final
lap came Carlson opened his lead
over the rest of the field ending
any chance for Kirchner to take a
trip to victory lane Saturday night.
Steve Carlson walked away with his
fourth win of the season followed by
Kirchner, Herbst, Mike Carlson, and
Kevin Nuttleman.
For some added Late Model action La
Crosse Speedway introduced a new
event Saturday night. The 6 for 6
Dash. The top six Late Model
qualifiers of the night race for six
laps: the winner taking home $100.
In this event J. Herbst was able to
hold off Steve Carlson for the win
and the cash.
Randy Steinhoff won the North
Country Contracts Sportsmen feature
with the help of racings worst
enemy, rain. Steinhoff was able to
maneuver his car through the pack as
the storm was slowly creeping in. He
took the lead at lap 6 and on lap 8
the sky opened up. Since the weather
wasn’t looking to clear anytime soon
the officials called the race making
Steinhoff the winner.
Due to the rain the United Auto
Supply Thunderstox weren’t able to
race their feature Saturday. Instead
they will run two feature events on
Saturday, July 26th.
July 26th is also Kids Night at La
Crosse Speedway, so bring out the
kids for some family fun. On
Saturday, August 2nd regular racing
will continue along with the first
Trailer Race of Destruction of the
season. August 8th is the second to
last Friday Night Street Drags of
2008, so if you want to be part of
the on track action be sure to mark
your calendars. For more information
