Saturday, June 14, 2008 (West Salem, WI) - After multiple tries and 2nd place finishes the 2007 Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models Champion Steve Carlson was finally able to pull out his first win of the season Saturday night at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Photo Highlights |
Carlson started in the fifth position and in two laps made it to third behind J. Herbst and Shawn Pfaff. A wreck in turn four five laps later put then leader Herbst in the pits. Pfaff took over the lead and Carlson was then second. It then looked as though Carlson was going to be stuck in that position. For multiple laps Carlson was all over the back bumper of Pfaff while trying to keep Emily Sue Steck, running third, behind him. Carlson was on the outside of Pfaff and then the inside trying to find some way to get around him, but Pfaff was to strong. Then with nine to go Carlson was able to pass Pfaff on the outside of turn three. Pfaff wasn’t going to let him win easily. Pfaff was then on the tail of Carlson, but never got the chance to retake the lead. Pfaff finished in 2nd and Steck jumped for joy with a 3rd place finish.
Rob Curran won the North Country
Contractors Sportsmen feature by
inches over Randy Humfeld. The race
was caution free leaving time for
Curran, Humfeld and Nick Clements
(3rd) to push and shove each other
in the 15 lap race. Within five laps
of getting the green flag the three
leaders were nose to tail. It was
anyone’s race when they were coming
around to the checkered flag three
wide. Curran then gave as much as he
could to keep his nose in front of
Humfeld to get the win.
Tim Steinhoff walked away from the
track Saturday night with a feature
win in the United Auto Supply
Thunderstox division. He was able to
make his way through three wide
racing and spinning cars to capture
and keep the lead over Keith Larson.
Larson was on the back bumper of
Steinhoff when they reached the
checkered. Charles Vian Jr. followed
Larson across the finish line and
pulled out an impressive 3rd place
finish.
Saturday night also marked the
annual Fastor Pastor Race. Pastors
from the Western Wisconsin area
travel to West Salem to participate
in this exciting event. Although
they might not race regularly these
drivers go all out for this race.
They were pushing and shoving each
other all over the track to get a
win, bringing the crowd to their
feet multiple times during both
heats. In the end it was Mark
Richards (winner of heat 1) and Rick
Sella (winner of heat 2) who were
able to survive the chaos and take
the checkered flags.
Saturday June 21st the regular
racing divisions take a night off to
make room for a special event:
Smash-O-Rama. Events include
Skidders, Enduro, Monster Truck,
Motorcycle Stunt show and more. On
Friday June 27th S & S Motorcycles
will sponsor motorcycle drag races
and a performance from a motorcycle
stunt man. Saturday June 28th
welcomes the return of La Crosse
Speedway’s regular racing divisions;
also fans will be able to take
photos with their favorite drivers.
