Todd Oliver Wins His First Late Model Feature Season
By: Ashley Iwanski

Saturday, June 28, 2008 (West Salem, WI)  - Todd Oliver was able to hold off Todd Korish and Mike Carlson in a one lap shoot out for the checkered to win his first Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature win at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Oliver gladly took the lead from Korish within a few laps of the green flag dropping. For Oliver that was the simple part. The difficult part came next when he had to hold off Korish along with both Mike and Steve Carlson who were quickly advancing. A caution mid-race brought the field right to Oliver. Mike Carlson was then all over the bumper of Korish allowing Oliver to cushion his lead. With 5 to go the pressure was on. Kevin Nuttleman was trying everything he could to break the top five, but Brent Kirchner refused to surrender his finishing spot. A caution on the last lap brought the field to Oliver once again. Try as he might Korish just couldn’t get to Oliver. Korish finished second, followed by Mike Carlson, Steve Carlson and Kirchner.

Jimmy Gilster inched his way in front of John Olson to win the North Country Contractors Sportsmen feature. Gilster and Olson were trading paint all night, each trying to stay in front of the other. Todd Lockington was stalking them, waiting for one of them to make a mistake so he could pounce and steal the lead. He never got the chance. Rob Mason was on Lockington’s bumper as Gilster and Olson raced side by side for the last two laps. Gilster only led one lap of the night, the last lap.

Andy Moore won the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, which wasn’t an easy task. One lap into the race the “Big One” occurred. Fifteen cars were piled up in the backstretch. While a few of the cars were able to stay in the race for a little while, most started to drop like flies within laps of the restart. The smaller field made room on the track for the remaining drivers to run Moore down. Still, none were quick enough and Moore was welcomed to victory lane.

The Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornets were back again Saturday night for some exciting racing. Cars were being pushed and shoved all over the field throughout both feature races. Steve Bornitz held off some fierce competition to win the first feature. Luck stayed in the family for the second feature won by Mark Bornitz, brother of Steve Bornitz.

Regular divisions will be racing for points on Thursday, July 3rd; an unscheduled night of racing meant to give drivers another opportunity to gain points due to cancellations earlier in the season. On Saturday, July 5th racing continues for the Late Models, Sportsmen and Thunderstox divisions. The night will end with a bang; La Crosse Speedway will have spectacular fireworks show to celebrate Independence Day. Then, on July 11th Friday Night Street Drags return. Brackets include Pickup Trucks, Motorcycles, Imports, Domestics, Muscle Cars and more.
