Thursday, July 3, 2008 (West Salem, WI) - Steve Carlson picked up his second feature win of the season in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models division Saturday at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway . Carlson was trailing his son, Mike Carlson, by 2 points in the Points Standings entering the night, but a feature win secured the lead for Steve Carlson.

When the checkered flag dropped
Brent Kirchner was quick to take the
lead as Paul Proksch was quickly
falling back. Kevin Nuttleman then
saw his chance to gain some
positions and passed Proksch for
third. Meanwhile, Steve Carlson was
passing cars left and right to break
into the top 5. Kirchner and
Nuttleman tried to put as much space
between themselves and Carlson, but
Carlson’s car was a rocket. Carlson
passed Nuttleman for 3rd on the
outside along with Tony Bagstad for
2nd. Carlson was then free to work
on Kirchner. It took him a few tries
though. With nine laps to go Carlson
and Kirchner were side by side for
the lead as they crossed the
start/finish line. Then Carlson saw
his chance to pass; he swerved high
then low and took the lead on the
backstretch within half a lap. It
wasn’t over. On lap 22 a caution
came out bringing the back of the
pack right to the tail of Carlson.
On the restart Nuttleman was on the
tail of Kirchner allowing Carlson to
gain a two car lengths lead and take
the win. Nuttleman was able to pass
Kirchner (3rd) for a 2nd place
finish.
The North Country Contractors
Sportsmen division drivers were
getting a little rowdy Saturday. Two
cars got together on the first lap
causing the field to get stacked up
coming out of turn four. This sent
all the drivers scattering for a
place to get through with minimal to
no damage. Amazingly all of the cars
involved stayed on the track for the
race restart. When the flag waved
for a second time two more cars got
together prompting another race
restart. As soon as the drivers had
a few laps under their belts the
race was on. Jes Tenner made his way
from 9th to 3rd and Jake Arneson
went from 14th to 4th all within a
few laps. Even with Tenner, Arneson
and many others closing the gap,
Branden Berg was able to hold on to
the lead through two more restarts.
A caution came out with one lap to
go moving the field to the back
bumper of Berg. Larry Bolster Jr.
tried to get around him but it was
Berg who crossed the finish line
first. Bolster Jr. finished 2nd and
Jes Tenner 3rd.
It seemed as though the United Auto
Supply Thunderstox drivers were
following the lead of the Sportsmen
drivers. While they didn’t have to
restart the race, they were getting
just as rough. All fifteen laps were
packed with action. Multiple times
there were two rows of 3 wide
racing. The drivers were pushing and
shoving each other all over the
track trying to gain any position
they could. It was Steve Owen who
walked away from the race in the
most important position: 1st. Brad
Warthan was 2nd and Tim Steinhoff
3rd.
On Saturday, July 5th racing
continues for the Late Models,
Sportsmen and Thunderstox divisions.
The night will end with a bang; La
Crosse Speedway will have
spectacular fireworks show to
celebrate Independence Day. Then, on
July 11th Friday Night Street Drags
return. Brackets include Pickup
Trucks, Motorcycles, Imports,
Domestics, Muscle Cars and more. And
on Saturday, July 11th the Queen
Bee’s will be accompanying the Late
Models, Sportsmen and Thunderstox
divisions for their first race of
the season. For more information
