J. Herbst Holds
Off Point Leaders For A Feature Win
By:

Saturday,
July 5, 2008 (West Salem, WI)
- J. Herbst was able to hold
off many of the current point
leaders to win his first Kwik Trip
Late Model division feature of the
season. This was a much needed win
to help Herbst move up into the top
ten in the point standings.
The action packed Late Model feature
began with a horrendous pile up in
turn one. Nine cars were involved in
the wreck including Tom Thill, who
had severe back end damage, and Bill
Niles. Niles’ car was stuck on top
of the car of Tim Nelson for about
ten minutes before safety crews
could pull them apart.

When the race
restarted both Steve and Mike
Carlson were quickly advancing
through the field as Herbst took the
lead. As Mike Carlson was passing
Todd Oliver for the 5th position
Oliver spun tapping Carlson. Carlson
was able to recover but lost about
five positions. On the restart Steve
Carlson was on the bumper of Brent
Kirchner trying to take the 4th
running spot. A battle for second
between Todd Korish and Emily Sue
Steck helped take the pressure off
of Herbst allowing him to take the
checkered. Steck walked away with
the best finish of her career - 2nd.
She was followed by Korish, Kirchner
and Steve Carlson.
Rick Schermerhorn also walked away
from La Crosse Speedway Saturday
night with his first feature win of
the season. For a while it looked as
though John Olson was going to get
his second feature win. Olson
magically held onto the lead
throughout a caution and multiple
ferocious battles for the lead. It
was the last fight for the lead with
Schermerhorn on lap eleven that lost
Olson the feature. Refusing to give
up another position got Olson a 2nd
place finish. Larry Bolster Jr.,
Nick Clements and Jes Tenner round
out the top five.
There was twice as much United Auto
Supply Thunderstox action Saturday
night. The Thunderstox division
began the feature line up for the
night. First the regular series
drivers battle for a win under the
lights. Josh Inglett was able to
retake the lead multiple times to
get to victory circle. Three wide
racing threatened to take out many
drivers, but they were able to keep
their cars under enough control to
cross the finish line and come back
later in the night.
The night ended with the Thunderstox
Novelty event: a race in the dark.
Cars had to provide their own lights
to get around the track. Many
drivers got very creative with their
lighting. Jamie Dummer’s Car
displayed an American flag wishing
everyone a happy 4th of July, while
another tried to bring order to the
track by using police lights on top
of the car. In the end Jason
Schaller proved to all he had the
best night vision and was declared
the winner.

Drags return. Brackets include
